A simple gluten free instant pot apple crisp recipe that’s done in 15 minutes!
Gluten Free Instant Pot Apple Crisp Recipe
It’s apple season! That means an abundance of apples that need to be made into yummy, healthier baked treats scarfed down by hungry little mouths. I have a few apple crisp recipes on my site, but this is the first one I made in the Instant Pot!
{Side note}: If you don’t have an Instant Pot yet, you are missing out in a major way! The Instant Pot does pretty much everything except get you dressed. It can make yogurt, slow cook meals, cook rice, or pressure cook chili in a half an hour. Here’s how the Instant Pot does the work of seven kitchen gadgets in one!
Back to the recipe. The trick to making these apples nice and tender in such a short amount of time (you’re only setting the Instant Pot for eight minutes) is to slice the apples nice and thin. And as a side note: If you are like us, you may like more of a crumble topping. If this is the case, double the butter, oats, flour and brown sugar and the topping will be nice and thick like in the pictures. ?
Make sure you don’t forget to read the recipe notes about the apple crisp topping!

servings
|
- 5-6 medium apples (any variety, I used Fuji)
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 cup gluten free oats
- 1/2 cup Bob's Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Flour Blend
- 1/2 cup organic brown sugar
Ingredients
|
- Peel the apples, remove seeds, slice thin and place in bottom of Instant Pot.
- Add cinnamon and water, then stir to combine.
- Stir together the remaining ingredients and spread on top of mixture.
- Secure the lid on the instant pot. Use the manual setting, and cook on high pressure for 8 minutes.
- Let pressure naturally release for 10 minutes, then turn the valve to vent. Let release the rest of the air, and then you can remove the lid, let cool for a few minutes, and eat!
If you are like us, you may like more of a crumble topping. If this is the case, double the butter, oats, flour and brown sugar.
Also, if you are using a more tart apple variety like Granny Smith, you may want to add a bit of maple syrup to the apples to sweeten them a bit.

You have so many ad’s on your website, I can’t even read the recipes. Too bad, because it looks as if you’ve put a great amount of effort into your recipes.
Shanti Landon says
Hi, Laurie! I am so sorry to hear this–the ads shouldn’t be hindering the content–if there is any way you can take a screenshot, that would be really helpful for me so I can see what is going on!

Is it possible to triple this recipe? In an 8 qt IP? Thanks 🙂
Shanti Landon says
Hi, Elizabeth! That should be fine!

We made this for dessert tonight and it tasted amazing. Being dairy and gluten free, I substituted coconut oil for the butter and it was a truly special treat. Thanks for the recipe!
Shanti Landon says
Awesome, so glad you liked it!
Mae says
Thanks for this recipe, looks amazing! We can’t have oats, even if GF. What would be a good substitute? Thanks and happy holidays!
Shanti Landon says
Have you ever tried millet?
Mae says
I found the brand Bakery on Maine that makes Organic Creamy Hot Breakfast Jade with amaranth and it comes out amazing. I’ll try with millet, sounds like a great idea. Thanks so much!

I just tried this and once it got to pressure it said burn. I turned it off and released pressure. Taste was ok except for the burnt bits. I’m using an 8qt, should I have added more than 1/2 cup water?
Shanti Landon says
Huh. That is odd! I’ve made this many times in my 8 qt and never had that happen. You only set for 8 minutes, right?
Carina says
I did set it for 8 min but it said burnt right after it came to pressure so I canceled it and released the pressure immediately.
Carina says
Yes!
Doris says
If I double or triple this recipe in my 8 qt instant Pot, does it affect the time?
Shanti Landon says
It should not affect the time!
Michele says
are the oats old fashioned or quick oats (or does it matter?) thanks!
Shanti Landon says
Either will work fine!
Lisa says
can i use rice flower?
Shanti Landon says
Rice flour alone will not create the same result, sorry!
Alma says
I’ve made this twice and both times the “crisp topping “ isn’t crisp. It’s chewy, tasty but I was hoping for crisp.
Anna says
My husband and I loved this recipe! I was very pleased that it satisfied my sweet tooth but without as much sugar as some of the other recipes I looked at. I am very glad we made this one!
Thank you!!

I have a 8 qt and I got the burned message right as it was starting the 8 min countdown for pressure.
I let it finish, but used the quick release instead of natural…the apples are very mushy, but taste wonderful.
Karen says
I made this last night in the instant pot and immediately got the burn message. How do I work around this?
Thank you!
Rae says
I got the burn sign shortly after it came to pressure as well. Not really burned just browned on the bottom as I stopped it right way. Disappointed! I even added a touch more water because I was worried it wasn’t enough and accidentally used one less apple!
Nick Bracy says
Was really looking forward to this. But I got the Burnt signal. Any work around?
Karl says
First time I did this in my 8qt instant pot, I got the Burn message pretty early on when the pot was coming up to pressure.
This time, I got a spring form pan (Instant pot has one that fits perfectly). Put 1 1/2 cups of water in, put the trivet in, and then the springform pan on top (after loading with the apples and topping).
No more BURN message. We’ll see how i turns out. Thinking of putting the pan under the broiler to crisp up the topping.
