Apple crisp is one of Superman’s favorite desserts. When he’s craving a home-baked good it’s often this. Now, this isn’t grain-free or Paleo, but it’s an awesome gluten-free option for those who aren’t on a strict grain-free diet.
The secret to making this over-the-top is the cinnamon oil. It’s not required, and you can use regular cinnamon in its place, but seriously, if you want it to have a unique, memorable twist, use the cinnamon oil! You will not be disappointed!

Ingredients
- For the filling:
- 3 apples peeled and chopped
- 2 drops cinnamon essential oil or 2 tsp cinnamon
- dash salt
- For the crumble:
- 1/2 cup packed organic brown sugar
- 3/4 cup Bob's Red Mill gluten free baking flour My Costco had this!
- 3/4 cup gluten free oats
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter or coconut oil softened
Ingredients

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- In a large bowl, stir together the filling ingredients and then pour evenly into a 8x8 or 9x9 glass pan.
- Note: The cinnamon essential oil is what makes this the "World's BEST." You can use regular cinnamon in place of it, but it doesn't have the same "ka-pow!" flavor.
- Mix together all the crumble ingredients in the same bowl you used for the apples and spread evenly over apples.
- Bake in oven for 35-40 minutes, until apples are tender and crumble is golden brown.
- Let cool for a few minutes before devouring!

I made this recipe and I must have done something wrong because when I ate it my mouth felt like it was full of flour. The only thing I did different was I didn’t have cinnamon oil so I used 2 t. Ground cinnamon which shouldn’t have created what happened. I had the same kind of flour and oats. Got any ideas why it turned out that way? I have to only rate this a one star. Sorry.

I’m so sorry this didn’t turn out for you, Judy! I’m not sure what happened? I have made this multiple times, and so far we have always loved it. Did you use butter or coconut oil? Did you use the full 1/2 cup?
Lisa says
We’re at high altitude, and experienced the same thing. I tried adding 1/2 cup apple juice and baking at 350 for 40 min. It helps keep the moisture in.
Sarah says
This is my go-to dessert. We all love it! Thanks so much!!
Shanti Landon says
Thanks, Sarah! So glad you like it!
Becky says
Is this correct 2tsp essential oil? That seems like way too much. Do you mean 2 drops?
Shanti Landon says
Hi, Becky! Thank you for pointing that out–when I imported my recipes into a new plugin, it made this say “2 tsp drops cinnamon oil” or “2 tsp cinnamon.” I’ve fixed it now–it should say 2 drops cinnamon oil, or 2 tsp cinnamon. =)
Laura says
Where can I find cinnamon oil?
Shanti Landon says
Hi, Laura! I get mine from doTERRA! It is food grade and safe to ingest in small amounts. =)
Sarah says
Ingesting essential oils is incredibly risky and should not be done unless under the care of a medical professional. PLEASE, you might not see the effects right away, but over time, over-exposure to essential oils used irresponsibly can damage vital organs in irreversible ways. I’m not trying to start a controversy, but I get VERY concerned when someone is using essential oils simply as flavor. It’s like sweetening your coffee with antibiotics. Essential oils, especially the strong ones like Cinnamon, shouldn’t be treated casually. Their medicinal properties are wonderful when used appropriately, but flavoring, in my opinion, is not an appropriate way to use them. PLEASE, consider using 2 tsp of ground cinnamon instead. Just two cents from a concerned reader.
Kay says
Your concern is well founded in that most oils purchased even at a health food store should not be ingested. It will say so on the bottle. But did you know that the industry standard for claiming an oil is pure is that only 5% of the bottle need have the named oil and the rest can be fillers. This is why there is such a disparity in price of essential oils. In a bottle of doTERRA cinnamon oil – 100% of the bottle is cinnamon oil. On each doTERRA label that is safe for consumption there will be a supplement fact box. If it does not have that box than it is not safe to ingest. So those of you making this delicious recipe – find some doTERRA oil – you can be sure it will be of the highest quality and safe for consumption.

This recipe NOT turn out for me. WAY too much flour & oats!! When I compared other apple crisp recipes they all called for much less flour & oats. I also would really appreciate having the filling ingredients & crumble ingredients listed in the instructions so I don’t have to look up other recipes to see what those are. Thank you for posting the gluten free recipe, but I think some changes need to be made.
Shanti Landon says
Hi, Jill! I’m sorry this didn’t turn out. I’m not sure what you mean about the filling & crumble ingredients needing to be listed in the instructions? There shouldn’t be any reason to look at other recipes to see what those are?
Polly says
Recipe says that butter is softened. How is the butter mixed with dry ingredients? Is it still in a solid form (pats) or is it melted?
Shanti Landon says
Hi, Polly! The butter is room temp, so not melted, but not hard chunks…in a pickle, you can just melt the butter!

I have been using this recipe for years now and its amazing! I love it and its always so easy to make.
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post this and share with all of us!
If anyone is curious, I do replace the brown sugar with honey and it was amazing!
Shanti Landon says
Thank you, Brytanny! I’m so glad you like it as much as we do!

This recipe was a hit! I made it today for our Thanksgiving dessert to go along with pumpkin pie and some squares. The whole crumble was eaten up, and everyone loved it. I will definitely be making this again. I used the ground cinnamon instead of the cinnamon oil, and 5 apples instead of 3, as the apples I had were rather small.
Shanti Landon says
I’m so glad you liked it, Jane!
Jim says
Just made this a second time. Tastes good I didn’t use the cinnamon oil. Your proportions for apples are way off. I can understand if some came up short using only 3 apples. Use at least 5 to fill your dish. Also use alteast a stick of butter for the crumble. Simple recipe that does taste good. Just use more apples and butter. A variety of hard and soft apples, like Macs and Granny’s, work well for moisture.

I absolutely LOVE this recipie!! Most of my family – dad, mom, aunts, and uncles – can’t have gluten….so this recipe was perfect!! Thank You sooo much for posting this recipe! I use it ALL they time!! 😍

THIS TASTES AMAZING. My son and I have tried a couple apple crisp recipes and this one is BY FAR the best!
Debbie says
This recipe did not turn out for me. My apples completely cooked away! By the time it was done cooking, all that was left was a thin layer of burnt apples on the bottom. The crumble didn’t turn into a crumble either. I even tried adding more butter half way through cooking to get it to brown together but that never happened. If I was to make this recipe again, I would at least double the apples and cut the flour and oats in half.
Kyla says
This was an easy to use recipe. Great taste. Only suggestion would be more apples- it was a bit heavy on the flour and oat mixture.
Definitely will be making again❤️
Courtney says
I follow this recipe to a T and my crumble on top came out as total sludge. Too bad! I have been looking forward to an apple crisp but can’t seem to find a recipe that does it right.
Karley says
This recipe needs apple juice added. It’s super dry. All flour. Also..I think it’s important to add that if you are going to use essential oils, to make sure you get them from a reputable, ethical company, and that they are organic. DoTerra is an incredibly unethical company that makes many false claims about their products.

Great recipe. Making it for Sunday dinner tomorrow. It always turns out perfect.
Love adding DoTERRA Oil anytime I can. I even added the cinnamon oil in my homemade apple butter that I can.
Lee says
I added caramel sauce before adding the topping. Everyone loves it. Thanks for such a delicious recipe.
