I’ve never ventured into the homemade ketchup business. Honestly, I’ve been a little scared that my kids wouldn’t like it. I buy organic Heinz ketchup at Costco, and that’s been just fine until now. This amazing sauce is like a cross between ketchup and BBQ sauce–tangy, but not too tangy. Sweet, but not too sweet. Perfect, really. It’s so simple, you literally throw everything into the crockpot and fuh-get about it! I have officially been converted to homemade ketchup!

- 2 lbs tomatoes skins on
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/3 cup coconut sugar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
- 2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp celery salt
- 1/8 tsp mustard powder
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
- 3 TBSP tomato paste
- 2 bay leaves
Ingredients

- Put everything into the crockpot and stir to combine.
- Cover and cook for 6-8 hours (the longer, the better).
- Once done, remove bay leaves and blend together with an immersion blender and desired consistency is achieved.
- Pour into airtight container and refrigerate, it should last for a few weeks!

I’m interested in trying this Shanti but need to make a substitution for the coconut sugar. It is as sweet as brown or white sugar, or what about honey?

If you’re ok using regular brown sugar, you can do that. I would probably use honey, but cut it down by about 1/2. Hope it turns out!

I have found coconut sugar to be sweeter than brown or white… a nice alternative might be maple syrup

I’m not sure! I have some in the freezer, but I’m not sure if it will be watery? I won’t know for awhile though. Let me now if you do it!

Ketchup freezes well but does dry out a little similar to soup. If the water separates, just give it a good shake after it thaws and before you use it 🙂

Hi there. I tried this and it turned out really watery. I ended up adding some tomato paste to get it to thicken, but it took away from some of the flavor & spice. Do you have any tips to avoid that in the future? I did use a regular blender because I don’t have an immersion blender…do you think I could have blended it too hard?

Hmmm. So you had to add more tomato paste than what was already in the recipe? I’m thinking maybe it was blended too much possibly? You left the skins on, right?

I did 3lbs of tomato and adjusted the recipe. After cooking it on high for 5 ish hours I took out a jar of ketchup. It tasted a little sweet, but it was hot. I realized we don’t really use ketchup to much so I wanted some BBQ sauce. So I added hickory flavor (2 TS), Tamari, (4 TS) Worcestershire sauce (4 TS) and cayenne. Cooked it on low over night for 8 hours, I just added sauteed chopped onion and another TS of hickory flavor and it is on low now for maybe an hour. Next time I will add the onions earlier along with the hickory flavor. I am going to leave it chunky.
All to say, if you want less ketchup and you play around with the recipe, you can get BBQ sauces at the same time.

Also…I can’t find coconut sugar and I was reading the comments about using honey in place of the coconut sugar. Since honey is already one of the ingredients, how much more honey would you use?

I’m curious as to how sweet this ketchup is going to be. Was yours really sweet? I am a ketchup freak, but I prefer it kinda savory with just a hint of sweet…not like the store bought taste. I’d hate to make this much ketchup and it turn out too sugary. Any suggestions of how much to cut down on the sugar and honey amounts?

Hi, JoAnn! You could definitely reduce the coconut sugar or honey a bit if you’re concerned about it being too sweet. Coconut sugar isn’t really sweet in the first place. You could try reducing the coconut sugar by 1/4 cup, and see how it turns out! You could always add another dash of honey at the end if you feel it’s needed. =) Hope that helps!

I just got done making this and it’s really watery. I even added extra tomato paste. Does it thicken as it cools? Should I add some corn starch? I used my immersion blender on it.
