My honest intelliBED review
It was time for a new mattress.
Our Sealy Posturepedic was about 12 years old, and was the classic stereotype of an old mattress: it was as though two ghosts were laying in our bed, even after we got up, because of the sagging on either side.
I started researching mattresses, and wanted to find one that both Superman and I would love. The last one we bought was kind of my pick because I had lower back issues at the time and needed a firm bed to help manage that. Fortunately, after changing our diet years ago, my lower back pain went away. Unfortunately, Superman developed lower back pain, most likely because he was sleeping on a rock hard bed for more than a decade. Whoops.
Anyhoo, I wanted something in the middle: a bed that would be supportive, but flexible.
And more importantly, I wanted a bed that was non-toxic.
You see, after researching mattresses, I discovered information that was new to me. Maybe it’s new to you, too? I dunno…I think I may have been late on the up-take.
What I discovered is that due to flammability laws, many mattresses contain high levels of chemicals, like formaldehyde and flame retardants. There is growing evidence that these chemicals can disrupt your thyroid and hormone levels, and many countries have banned the use of them. {source} That should definitely tell you something!
I have been on a quest for years to slowly but surely reduce the toxic load in our home wherever possible. And being that we spend a good 8-9 hours per night laying on our mattress, it seems as though investing in a less-toxic mattress would be worth it in the long run., while also getting the right blankets for our bed as we could see different weighted blankets on sale to find the best choice for us.
I fell upon intelliBED multiple times during my research for “non-toxic” mattresses, and also have a few friends who rave about theirs and have been very content with their purchases. The company’s 60-day “try it out” policy is what put me over the edge. I figured if we ended up not loving it, we could return it within a few months, no harm, no foul.

The intelliBED is definitely different than “regular” mattresses.
Many traditional mattresses just have coils, but as you can see, intelliBED doesn’t in some of their mattresses. The model we bought, the Posture Perfect Lo-Motion, however, does have an extra support layer that contains a pocketed coil. You can read more about the model we bought HERE. It’s hard to describe the intelliGEL on the inside, but here’s a quick video that may help explain it:

I kept a diary for the first few days to keep track of how we were liking the bed:
Day One: I woke up with my whole torso sore. Not like sharp or stabbing pains, but almost like I did a major workout yesterday. Thankfully, the peeps at intelliBED told me this might be the case as my body gets used to sleeping in a whole new position, so I’m not worried. I tossed and turned a lot last night, kinda like I was sleeping in someone else’s bed. The bed had that “new bed” smell–not really chemical-smelling, but just a scent I’m not used to, and was noticeable. Update at 7 pm: the soreness went away shortly after getting out of bed this morning, so we’ll see how tonight goes!
Day Two: Woke up sore all over my back again, maybe a bit less than yesterday. Slept a bit better, but still tossed and turned quite a bit. Good news: no odor last night! The soreness went away again shortly after I got out of bed.
Day Three: Wow! Soooo much better today! Definitely didn’t feel like I had a workout in the middle of the night. A nice touch–a customer service rep called me this morning and wanted to check in to see how we were liking the bed, if we had any questions, etc.
Day Four: I’ve noticed that the last two mornings, my rotator cuff doesn’t hurt anymore when I wake up. I became a side-sleeper years ago, after realizing that sleeping on my belly was just not good for my neck. I’m used to sleeping on my side now, but every morning I wake up and my shoulders, (my left more than my right) would hurt. That seems to have disappeared, though. I’m pretty happy about that.
Day 30: It’s been a month now since we got our intelliBED. I have to say, I pretty much love it! I sleep better, wake up less stiff than I used to, and overall just feel better getting out of bed in the morning.
Final opinion: I would definitely recommend giving the intelliBED a try. I don’t believe any bed is going to work for everyone, but it’s working for us, and I feel so much better knowing we aren’t sleeping on a bed of chemicals every night, and we’re sleeping better. Plus, you can try it for 60 days and if you don’t love it, you can send it back.

We recently replaced our old Sealy with a natural latex mattress after my own research convinced me it was necessary. Natural mattresses are pricey, once you know what’s in the regular kind, you just can’t un-know. 🙂
Have you replaced your kids’ mattresses?
Shanti Landon says
I know!! We haven’t replaced the kids’ mattresses yet, but it’s on our list of things to do!

Was wondering if you still love your mattress? The last big $ mattress I invested in I loved for the first month too. After the first year tho I hated it. Looking for one that I’ll like for more than 6 months.

Yes! Still love it!
