I wore shorts to church this weekend. Afterwards in a conversation at a restaurant someone said, "You wear THAT to church?!" I laughed and just said, "Yup!" but I was pondering it later. You see, I am completely free in my faith. My "religion" is not about a building, a pastor, or a set of rules I need to follow. It's not about pointing fingers or condemning others or being guilted into "better behavior." It IS about my personal relationship with Jesus and how that relationship overflows from ... continue reading...
I’m officially 40.
40. 😳 Four decades. 14,600 days. In those years, I’ve walked the slums of India and fed children who wouldn't have had a meal if we weren't there that day. I’ve pick-axed my way through the brush of remote Honduras. I’ve washed the feet of the destitute in Mexico. I've prayed with the homeless and grieved with those I love. My boys leave tomorrow.
I was sitting at my desk working this morning, when all of the sudden I felt a lump in my stomach. These three boys leave tomorrow for the whole summer. This was the last time she wore that dress. Later that day, she fell down and tore it, and I tossed it after it sat in my room waiting to be repaired for months. Because let's be honest: having five small children pretty much took all my bandwidth and I didn't have any extra to fix it, and by the time I ... continue reading...

This morning on the way to the bus stop, one of my boys said, “If a school shooter was on our campus, would I get in trouble if I killed him?” So many thoughts went through my head… How horrible it is that my son even has to consider this. How tragic that our own kids can’t go to school with the freedom that we had as children. How long has my son been thinking about this? Has he been laying awake at night wondering what he would do if a school shooter came on his campus? Has he ... continue reading...
