I think my dear, sweet grandfather would be devastated at the state of our country today. He would be one of the “old white men” that so many now condemn. It breaks my heart to think what my grandpa, a World War II veteran, would see if he were here. He would see a sea of people reacting emotionally to every word spoken. He would see restraint thrown out the window. He would see the pointing of fingers and the loss of self-examination. He would see anger and hostility and entitlement. He ... continue reading...
My husband is autistic.
My husband is autistic. I kind of struggled with how to say that. Some would say, "My husband has autism." That sounds less daunting and more like it's something that can be changed...but would I ever say, "I have extroversion"? Of course not, I would just say that I'm extroverted. So, let's just be real...my husband is incredible, wonderful, awesome, and autistic. Chris doesn't consider autism something to "cure" or "recover from;" it's who he is. He was born with, in my mind, incredible ... continue reading...
I think we’ve all forgotten something…

I drove to the bus stop, where my kids all had the privilege of getting on a bus with all of their friends and heading to school. I went to work in my local government office, and was privileged enough to be able to help resolve multiple concerns for community members in a short amount of time. I took my daughter to the doctor, where I handed over ... continue reading...

Recently, someone asked me what it's like parenting both biological and adopted kids. That's a loaded question with no single answer. But I'll say this: One of these children grew in my womb. I felt the first flutter of movement, the nudging and stretching as he grew, and the pain of childbirth. The other four children grew in the bellies of other women. I didn’t get to see Michael’s first steps. I didn’t hear Grace’s first cry. I didn’t give Naomi her first taste of solid food, or change ... continue reading...
