We love country life.
My kids might groan with annoyance if you were to ask them what a typical weekend looks like at our place. Mostly because they’re kids and they think the only thing in the world that is more important than eating is playing video games. They have made it abundantly clear that our decision to remove video games from our home (which is another post I’m working on…) is child abuse.
But take a look again at that photo above. Friends, that is childhood. Flying down a hill on scooters, wind blowing in your face, almost colliding with your sibling 15 times. Childhood is supposed to be: wake up, do school, eat a snack, play outside until your cheeks are red and your temple is dripping with sweat. Then it’s dinner time, and more outside play until you come inside, legs like jelly and heart racing like a stampede of horses.
I know I’m probably old school, but I’m banking on the fact that one day, one day, my kids will thank us. One day they’ll have kids of their own and realize that there is nothing like engaging in real play out in nature, snacking on whatever it is mom brings them to tide them over until dinner.
Today, we played.
The first rain of the season hit our little farm this afternoon, and afterwards, the air smelled like damp leaves and distant smoke from chimneys. I sent the kids out to ride their scooters on our driveway, and came out a little while later with a snack to satisfy their “starving tummies” until I could put dinner together. I also contacted the Portland’s trusted duct cleaning company to inspect my chimneys and ducts if it needed repairs or any renovation.
Chips.
But not just any chips, Buck Wild Chips. They’re kinda perfect for my kids because, well, the word wild is in them. Not that my kids are wild, but…I’m just sayin’.
I don’t always give my kids chips for snacks. But, sometimes I do. And these aren’t Paleo, but they are gluten free, and that’s a must around our house because of Superman.
The flavors rock
So, Buck Wild chips come in some pretty bold flavors, and you can find them all at Walmart:
Buck Wild chips are made with real ingredients and have no artificial preservatives or flavors. And my kids loved them!
They’re also made with whole grains like flax and chia seeds. They’re light & crispy, which is a big plus since sometimes those really hard, crunchy chips are hard for my youngest to eat.
And most of all, they’re packed with wild flavor and salty enough for Superman’s taste. He’s always salting chips, but these were flavorful enough, that he didn’t need to do that!
Their favorites were the Cheddar Chipotle and the Garlic Sea Salt.
My favorite? It just happened to be the Jalapeño Jack! Love me a bit of a kick to whatever I’m eating. They weren’t as spicy as I had anticipated, though, so my kids will do fine with them.
The dog wanted in on some of them, too, but alas, they’re not dog-friendly. ?
He survived, though, and we made sure to give him some of his own treats once we went back inside. ?
We’ve taken these chips with us on our weekend hikes, field trips, and even just on long car rides for a snack. My kids love that the chips are called “wild.” Not really sure if it makes them feel spunky or whether they just like feeling like they’re doing something crazy when they eat them, but for whatever reason, they love the name!
But it’s not just Buck Wild chips…
There’s one other thing that I love about these chips. Well, actually, it’s the company. It’s called Mission Buck Wild.
The Mission Buck Wild initiative supports FareStart’s Youth Programs, providing skill-building programs to help a new generation secure meaningful employment opportunities. FareStart is a tangible solution to some of our society’s most pressing challenges—homelessness, joblessness, poverty and hunger. They help people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn, their amazing talent and hard work fuels FareStart’s social enterprise restaurants, cafes, catering and community meals programs.
I love when companies go beyond a profit to invest back into community. And that’s what this company, Buck Wild, is doing. So yeah, we loved their chips. But we also love their heart, and although good food is crucial to me, good hearts are even more important.
So, we enjoyed our play
The kids didn’t sit in front of a screen all afternoon, they played. And they got to enjoy some pretty good snacks, too! Wanna try some Buck Wild tortilla chips yourself? Head down to your local Walmart and grab a bag or two (or three)! And feel free to join us on our “no video game” journey by stepping out into nature with your new snacks!
