I wore shorts to church this weekend. Afterwards in a conversation at a restaurant someone said, “You wear THAT to church?!” I laughed and just said, “Yup!” but I was pondering it later.
You see, I am completely free in my faith. My “religion” is not about a building, a pastor, or a set of rules I need to follow. It’s not about pointing fingers or condemning others or being guilted into “better behavior.” It IS about my personal relationship with Jesus and how that relationship overflows from my heart into the lives of others.
When you walk into our church, you’ll see people from all walks of life: broken, healed, struggling, victorious, left, right, skeptical, faithful, divorced, married, straight and gay…you’ll see people wearing shorts, jeans, dresses, flip flops or suits and ties, and all feel welcome.
The “church” is supposed to be:
people.
love.
intentionality.
integrity.
empowerment.
generosity.
freedom.
growth.
progress.
impact.
relationship.
Jesus.
So, wear shorts if you like. Come in with your problems, your questions, your tattoos, and your piercings. Jesus has an unfathomable way of loving each of us equally, and yet each of us is his favorite.
P.S. Chris has always said that if Jesus can wear flip flops and a bed sheet, then he can wear a t-shirt and shorts!
It’s about the heart, not the traditions. 😊
